Cisco Meraki Licenses & Renewals — Made Simple

Every Meraki device needs an active licence. Tell us what you have and what you need — we’ll check your licensing model and quote the correct licences.

The three Meraki licensing models

A Dashboard organisation uses one licensing model — Cisco does not allow mixing models in the same organisation. That is why we confirm your model before quoting.

Subscription licensing

For new and renewing customers

Activated when a subscription licence key is claimed in Dashboard. Each subscription has its own fixed end date and is managed per network. If a subscription lapses, Amber Mode keeps devices passing traffic while you renew.

Co-termination (co-term)

Default for new organisations created since Sept 2023

All licences in the organisation share one expiry date, calculated as a weighted average of the licences claimed. Adding licences or hardware recalculates that date. Terms of 1, 3, 5 or 7 years.

Per-device licensing (PDL)

Existing PDL organisations only

Each device has its own licence and expiry. Cisco no longer offers PDL to new customers, but existing PDL organisations can still add and renew licences.

Before you buy: common licensing mistakes

  • Hardware without a licence — a device without an active licence cannot be managed from Dashboard. Order both together.
  • Wrong licensing model — co-term licence keys cannot be claimed into a subscription organisation, and vice versa.
  • Wrong tier — security appliances need the tier you intend to use (Enterprise, Advanced Security or Secure SD-WAN Plus). In a co-term organisation, all security appliances use the same tier.
  • Wrong size — switch and appliance licences are model-specific (e.g. 24-port vs 48-port).
  • Renewal timing — with co-term, adding licences changes the expiry date for the whole organisation.

We will never ask for your Cisco account or Meraki Dashboard password. To check your licensing model, look at Organization > Licensing in Dashboard or simply choose “I don’t know” below.
